Our History
Welcome to the story behind Heneghan, White, Cutting & Roentz Insurance Agency—one of the oldest insurance agencies in Illinois and the longest-operating business in Jersey County. Our legacy began in 1859, when Isaac Harbet founded a modest agency representing Home Insurance Company. A few years later, Leonard M. Cutting Sr. took the reins and established what became known locally as the Cutting Agency—laying the groundwork for a trusted, community-focused insurance agency in Jerseyville, IL.
Through generations of leadership, the agency grew in size and reputation. From Leonard Cutting Jr. to D.E. Beaty, and then to Irving White—whose reputation for integrity made him a natural fit—each transition built on a commitment to reliable, straightforward service. In 1931, the White-Cutting Agency was born, and with it came decades of steady growth and a widening client base across the region.
In 1946, Irving’s son Charlie returned from World War II and continued the agency’s growth for over 40 years. When he sold the business to Steven Rice in 1987, the name changed to White, Cutting & Rice Insurance Agency—reflecting new leadership and a continued dedication to the local community. That dedication remains central to everything we do.
In 2010, the agency entered a new era when Joseph Heneghan—an experienced insurance agent with two decades of independent service—acquired the firm and merged it with his own. The result was Heneghan, White, Cutting & Rice Insurance Agency, a name that stands for enduring service and local trust. By 2018, we had expanded into a new office in the heart of Jerseyville to better serve our growing client base.
Today, under the leadership of Ray Roentz, CIC, who became the majority owner in 2021, we continue to operate as a deeply rooted independent insurance agency in Jerseyville, IL. Our experienced insurance agents are proud to carry on a tradition that has prioritized people over policies for more than 160 years.
